A Highway vs. a Critically Endangered Bird
(Spoon-billed Sandpiper)
A Highway vs. a Critically Endangered Bird
Beihai, April 30, 2026 — The EIA for the G228 Guangxi Coastal Highway (Dafengjiang–Gaode Section) was approved today. The planned route will cut through the key wintering habitat of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, occupying approximately 24.28 hectares, including 8.45 hectares of ecological protection red line.
With a global population of only 300–700 individuals, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper is listed as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN. The Dafengjiang estuary tidal flat in Hepu, Guangxi, is one of its most stable wintering sites in China, hosting about 3% of the world's population.
In early April, after the EIA public notice, environmental NGO "Friends of Nature" submitted objections, arguing the project violates the Wildlife Protection Law and requesting disapproval. On April 30, the Beihai Administrative Approval Bureau granted the approval, rejecting those recommendations.
Once again, development has prevailed over conservation.

Update
2026-05-01 Central Ecological and Environmental Protection Inspection Team (5th Group) arrived in Guangxi; the project was listed as a key supervised case through public reports
2026-05-25 Guangxi Department of Ecology and Environment held a remediation work meeting, conveyed the autonomous region's decision to suspend construction, and ordered re-evaluation of route selection, noting that the original EIA conclusion on impacts to spoon-billed sandpiper habitat was "scientifically insufficient"

Sand Martins Died from Industrial Sand Extraction: The Sand Martin Deaths at Sand Quarry in Mianyang, Sichuan
In early March 2026, a video showed dead sand martins at a sand quarry in Mianyang, with some birds pinned beneath rocks. The sand martin is a nationally protected species, and the quarry had become a breeding site.
On March 9, the Mianyang Forestry Bureau announced: over 700 nests confirmed, deaths not exceeding 10; cause attributed to rain and wind causing natural collapse; intentional human destruction ruled out.
Questions:
-
Sand martins nest only in near-vertical sandy cliffs, highly sensitive to surrounding disturbances.
-
The quarry continuously removed sand for construction — as lower layers were excavated, the upper nesting section lost support and collapsed. The sand martins died precisely because of industrial sand extraction.
-
Birds pinned under rocks contradict the "natural collapse" theory, more consistent with mechanical operations or collapse after sand removal.

30 Belugas on the Brink: Marineland's "Euthanasia Blackmail"
Marineland — a defunct theme park in Niagara Falls, Canada — is on the verge of bankruptcy and has threatened to euthanize approximately 30 beluga whales in its care unless the federal government provides emergency funding by a specified deadline. The park ceased operations in 2024 and is insolvent. According to The Canadian Press, at least 19 belugas and 1 killer whale have died at the park since 2019. Former trainers have gone public: pool walls are peeling, paint chips float in the water, filtration systems frequently fail, only 18 staff care for two large beluga pools, and full-time trainers earn just $18.50 CAD/hour.
Canada passed the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act in 2019, banning commercial breeding, performances, and strictly restricting imports/exports. Marineland attempted to sell the whales to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China, but the Fisheries Minister rejected the plan, citing unwillingness to "perpetuate their exploitation." Marineland is effectively holding animal lives hostage — when profits dry up, they use euthanasia as bargaining leverage. But these 30 lives are real. Since Canada permits no new commercial captivity, the most humane path forward is allowing export to qualified institutions or having the government purchase and relocate them to ocean sanctuaries, rather than letting them perish in bureaucratic gridlock.
